Once, during the evening, I sat down on the balcony and stared at the sky.
I watched the sky change its color, hues of bright blue turning darker, the sky getting swirled with shades of orange and pink as the sun started setting.
And then the sky almost turned purple and finally it went dark and got lit up by the stars smiling down at me.
I looked at my watch and it seemed that I had sat there for almost 2 hours and did absolutely nothing but stare at the sky.
That’s what I felt after watching Meiyazhagan.
The movie is neither a thriller, nor a drama, nor romantic, nor a comedy…..it’s just a beautiful medley of emotions in various shades.
Meiyazhagan is about a young boy, Arulmozhi, who has to leave his hometown after his family is cheated by their own relatives in a land dispute.
An absolutely dejected boy, shuts down his childhood memories and leaves with his parents to “Madras” cutting off all connections with his hometown and the family, growing up to be a quiet and grumpy man.
Till, he gets called back and upon reaching there he meets an enigma who leads him on a path of self discovery.
The movie has been shot beautifully in rural Tamil Nadu with deliberate long shots to allow you to take in the stunning scenery.
The entire script revolves around the two main characters played by Arvind Swamy and Karthi and what a phenomenal job they have done.
The entire banter between the two goes on for 2 hours+ and yet you don’t get bored of it, with both of them complementing each other on screen.
The climax is done well and brought a smile to my face.
Such movies are not made very often, infact they shouldn’t be made too often either. They come once in a while and leave you enthralled with the feel-good factor.
At the end of the movie all you have is a smile on your face while wondering, where the hell did those two hours go.
You know…..exactly like the time I spent watching the sky change its colors.
#DaMoRating: 9/10
Disclaimer: I could have said the movie was a bit long, but personally, I didn’t feel bored for a single minute. So the 1 mark has been cut as standard deduction.
