ABLE ELBA
For fans of the original BBC series, “Luther: The Fallen Sun” picks up where it left us, in a movie sequel. It has all the key elements of the series absolutely intact, on a slightly larger scale. Idris Elba once again plays the titular disgraced cop DCI John Luther in his usual badass way, with oodles of swag and characteristic gravitas, all put to good use in a continuation of the larger storyline.
This time, he is on the tail of a narcissistic serial killer played with enough menace by Andy Serkis. This is no ordinary psychopath though — he is one step ahead of the cops and always has something bigger coming. But nothing, absolutely nothing, stops Luther from finding him, not the new DCI Odette Raine (Cynthia Erivo), not even prison.
A jailbreak, multiple killings, a tense standoff in Piccaddily Circus, insider help from trusted friend Schen (Dermot Crowley), blood and bruises, and the baddies coming to justice; it has everything familiar that we have been accustomed to in the series. It does not break any new ground, but Luther keeps us engaged throughout with enough thrills and twists.
In the end, tough as he may be, John Luther is still human, which is one of his best traits. This one is for the fans certainly — carried primarily by an able Elba, but it isn’t a bad thriller to watch on a Friday night. You won’t remember any of it the next day.
