“Why is rape not considered as a heinous crime?”

Pranab J. Deka repeatedly asks you this question through his movie and refuses to move further.

Kooki is a movie on rape, about rape and everything that surrounds a rape looked at from the mindset of the rape survivor.

Unlike most movies that deal with the subject of rape, this one does not have a courtroom drama. Instead it focuses on the survivor and carries forward her tale of horror.

Pranab pulls no punches, when it comes to talking about the subject of rape.

The rape is shown and its shown in such a horrific manner that it will make your blood run cold.

Ritisha Khaund has done an absolutely fantastic job as the minor who has been gang raped and yet feels that justice hasn’t been served despite a quick action by the police and a fast tracking of the court case which her lawyer father wins.

Her 10 minute monologue towards the end is very convincing and is by far one of the most terrifying monologue I have ever heard.

Of the support cast Bodhisattva Sharma is brilliant and combines the youthful innocence of a teenager with a very mature act.

Rajesh Tailang once again proves himself to be one of the finest character actors of the time. The scene where he walks into the doctor’s office with confidence and comes out as a shattered man shows the ease with which he can switch personas.

Pranab J Deka has left the movie inconclusive posing a question to all of us.

And that’s why this movie needs to be watched and should raise debates on the question asked……and we need to keep asking this question over and over again, till we get answers.

“Why is rape not considered as a heinous crime?”

#DaMoRating: 9/10

Disclaimer: 1 point has been cut because of the depiction of rape on screen. This might be too traumatic for many people (mostly women), which might not allow them to watch this movie and I think it is important that people do watch this movie so that part could have been toned down a bit. Though the “shock” value of that scene definitely helps in ensuring that you know exactly how horrific the act is.
