There have been several movies about a funeral getting a dysfunctional family under one roof and there have been several movies based on a road trip.
Mangesh Joshi merges the two situations and brings out this humorous tale of a weirdly bound joint family living under the same roof in Pune.
The patriarch of the family dies and his last wish is to have his ashes spread out in various places which makes the family embark on a road trip.
As the movie progresses, the secrets start tumbling out of the closet and the cracks in the relationships are exposed.
The first scene itself where the cotton from the nose of the dead body falls down sets the tone for the dark humor in the movie.
The movie is backed by a stellar cast with Mohan Agashe leading the pack as the newly anointed patriarch.
Amey Wagh has done a fantastic job as the son portraying the repressed generation, bursting out when he can’t control himself anymore.
Of the rest of the cast Geetanjali Kulkarni has aced her character with the subtlety it deserves.
Mrunmayee Deshpande has grabbed the mantle of a girl who knows what she wants and knows how to get it, perfectly.
Vandana Gupte and Shubhangi Gokhale, two extremely talented actresses have their own parallel track going on and it works too.
Though the movie is based on an oft used premise the treatment is different as it toys with you casually and leaves you smiling towards the end.
The movie is available in multiple languages including Hindi and also has subtitles.
#DaMoRating: 6.5/10
Disclaimer: The few points are cut because sometimes the pace gets too lazy and yeah, as I said before, funeral and road trip are way too often used.
