After watching the theatrical trailer filled with numerous flying motorcycles, mortally injured baddies, a tough-talking Tabu as a police officer, inane one-liners and a stern-looking Ajay Devgn wielding a you-guessed-it trident (Trishool, dammit!), the only thing I can say for this patent ‘craziness’ is that a lobotomy is in order for members of the potential audiences. After all, that used to be a cure for many a mental ailment Alas, lobotomies are banned (for good reason).
I always try to imagine the ‘creative discussions’ that go into making up these stories. A group of extremely eager people (I like to imagine corporate, studio types sitting in a stylish conference room) listening to ‘the story’ from a lunatic with his hands in that oh-so-filmy – like gesture who begins with a, “Sir, there’s this rowdy..” with the most sincere voice that can only mean 100% conviction, then goes on for the next three hours in manic agitation, driveling at corners of his mouth to narrate the most puerile of stories… to universal applause from everyone present.
“Now THIS will be the movie that changes the course of Hindi cinema, and we don’t care what the elite latte-sipping critics think. We make movies for the masses!” they conclude before they party in anticipation of the 500+ crores they imagine they’ll collect at the box office.
Sigh.
Mind you, this isn’t unique to the Hindi film industry, it is a universal problem, especially in the south, which is replete with examples of the “There was a rowdy” trope, who, with glorious intention and righteous indignation, fights ‘the system’ (corrupt to the very core, of course), rising like a pheonix from the ashes of a traumatic past, and verily destroys everything in sight, alluding, in no small measure, to the myths and legends of religious symbolism.
Bholaa, Koala, Colocasia, Hajmola. I couldn’t care less. I might still watch the movie though, like watching a ship slowly sink into the ocean taking everything and everyone with it. Who wouldn’t!
