Paani is a Marathi movie based on one man’s quest to bring water to his drought plagued village in Marathwada.
Hanumant Babu Kendre is a young man from the village of Nagderwadi, who is keen on getting married to a girl who he falls in love with at first sight.
But there is a small problem. Hanumant comes from a village in Marathwada which has little to no water. And the girl refuses to marry him for that specific reason.
This starts off the struggle of Hanumant to ensure that his village is drought free.
Addinath M Kothare who plays the role of Hanumant and has also directed the movie has done a fantastic job.
He blends perfectly in the rural background and the grit and determination is written on his face in every scene.
He is supported by some great performances by the rest of the cast where everyone plays their part in the most convincing manner.
Subodh Bhave and Kishore Kadam (सौमित्र) have small but effective characters and add value to the storyline.
The script is tight and the story is fast paced. It highlights the plight of the villages of Marathwada without making it too weepy, instead focussing on how tables can be turned through some smart and hardwork.
Paani is a true story. Hanumant Kendre does exist and his efforts did pay off.
Within 4 years, Nagderwadi not only became drought free but now supplies water to 5 neighbouring villages.
This movie is a must watch for those who like inspiring stories and for the brilliant depiction of rural Maharashtra.
#DaMoRating: 8/10
Disclaimer: 1 point has been cut as standard deduction and 1 point has been cut because I didn’t like Addinath’s mucchi.
