It’s gruesome, it’s horrifying, it’s terrifying and yet it tends to lose its grip.

1000 Babies starts off really well as it creates a web of intrigue backed by a melancholy setting about an old crazy woman who seems to have lost her mental balance.

The first three episodes are fast paced as your curiosity is piqued by the mystery surrounding the writings on the wall.

The performances of Neena Gupta and Rahman are spot on.

Radha Gomaty plays the younger evil version of Neena’s character and let me say that she is the scariest thing I have ever seen. Absolute evil personified. Infact I would be damn scared to meet her unless surrounded by a 1000 people (not babies).

Post the third episode the series starts dragging though.

The psychological drama coverts into an investigative thriller, and that’s fine, but the episodes become too long drawn out.

Unnecessarily patronising dialogues and detailed repeated explanations spoil the pace and you tend to lose your interest.

The climax is too convoluted as Najeem Koya tries to be “different” by adding one too many twists in an already confusing narrative.

The wish to keep the viewers wondering about a season 2 actually ends the season 1 abruptly and indecisively.

If it wasn’t for the stretched narrative this would have been a brilliant thriller, but despite that the series makes for a decent watch especially for the performances and the Kerala settings.

The series is original Malayalam, also available as dubbed in several languages including Hindi and has subtitles.

#DaMoRating: 5/10

Disclaimer: 5 out of 10 is an average score. For those who don’t know what average means, it means it’s an okay series to watch. Don’t make me explain the ratings everytime by asking “Why 5? Is it bad?” 😤😤
